The Dark Side of the Abbey

Throughout its history, the calm and tranquility of the Abbey was often disturbed by fire, flood, and plague.

Added to this there were regular outbreaks of riot, rebellion, and bloody violence, providing a wealth of tales to tell, as we explore the turbulent side of the Abbey’s history.

The Dark Side of the Abbey runs monthly at 11.00 am on 17 April, 13 May, 17 June, 21 July, 26 August, 23 September and 20 October, and at 6.00pm on 1 July.

Tours start on Angel Hill, opposite the Abbey Gate, and last 90 minutes. Tours are in English and are suitable for all ages and abilities. Please let us know beforehand if you have any special access requirements. We regret that we cannot accept dogs (apart from assistance dogs) on our tours.
