The Legacy of the Abbey

Henry VIII closed the Abbey in 1539, but its legacy did not end there.

It provided building stone for the town it had once shaped and ruled, and became a botanical garden, a public park and a place of recuperation in two world wars. Five centuries after the last monk departed, we look at the Abbey’s legacy today.

The Legacy of the Abbey runs monthly at 11.00 am on 18 April, 15 May, 16 June, 17 July, 27 August, 22 September and 24 October, and at 6.00pm on 5 August.

Tours start on Angel Hill, opposite the Abbey Gate, and last 90 minutes. Tours are in English and are suitable for all ages and abilities. Please let us know beforehand if you have any special access requirements. We regret that we cannot accept dogs (apart from assistance dogs) on our tours.
